In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Ablution (wudu) is the ritual purification required before prayer in Islam. It is the key to Salat: without valid wudu, prayer is not accepted. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Allah does not accept the prayer of any of you who has broken their wudu until they perform it again.”
— Narrated by Al-Bukhari (no. 6954) and Muslim (no. 225)
This guide shows you how to perform wudu, from its conditions to the complete process, with Arabic supplications, transliterations and English translations.

What is wudu?
Wudu (الوُضُوء) is ritual purification with water that a Muslim performs before certain acts of worship, primarily prayer (Salat), touching the Quran (mushaf) and performing Tawaf around the Kaaba. The word comes from an Arabic root meaning “cleanliness” and “radiance”.
Allah says in the Quran:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ
“O believers! When you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and [wash] your feet up to the ankles.”
— Quran, Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:6)
This verse establishes the fundamental obligations of wudu, which form the basis of this guide.
Conditions for valid wudu
For wudu to be valid, several conditions must be met:
1. Islam — Wudu is valid only for a Muslim.
2. Mental awareness — The person must be conscious and of sound mind.
3. Intention (Niyyah) — The intention to purify yourself must be present in your heart when you begin. It does not need to be spoken aloud.
4. Pure water (Tahur) — The water used must be pure and purifying. Tap water, rainwater, spring water and seawater are all valid. The Prophet ﷺ said about the sea: “Its water is pure and purifying” (narrated by Abu Dawud, no. 83, and At-Tirmidhi, no. 69; authenticated by Al-Albani).
5. Removing anything that prevents water from reaching the skin — Remove anything that could prevent water from touching the skin, such as nail polish, wax or certain types of paint.
6. Order (Tartib) — The body parts must be washed in the prescribed order: face, arms, head and feet. This is the view of the majority of scholars, based on the order mentioned in the verse from Al-Ma’idah (5:6).
7. Continuity (Muwalah) — Wudu must be performed continuously, without a long interruption between washing the different body parts. If one part dries before the next is washed, wudu must be started again.
How to perform wudu step by step
Here are the detailed steps of wudu according to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. The obligatory steps (fard) are marked. The others are recommended acts (Sunnah) that complete and perfect wudu.
Intend in your heart to perform wudu to purify yourself. Do not say the intention aloud: this is an innovation with no basis in the Sunnah.
Say “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah) before you begin. Some scholars of the Hanbali school consider this step obligatory, based on the hadith: “There is no wudu for the one who does not mention the name of Allah” (narrated by Abu Dawud, no. 101). The majority of scholars consider it strongly recommended.
Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, rubbing between the fingers. This was the consistent practice of the Prophet ﷺ, as described by Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) in his account of the Prophet’s wudu (narrated by Muslim, no. 226).
Take water in your right hand, put it in your mouth, swish it around thoroughly, then spit it out. Repeat three times. Note: according to the Hanbali school and some scholars, rinsing the mouth is obligatory.
Draw water into your nose using your right hand (istinshaq), then expel it using your left hand (istinthar). Repeat three times. The Prophet ﷺ recommended drawing water thoroughly into the nose except when fasting (narrated by Abu Dawud, no. 142, and At-Tirmidhi, no. 788).
Wash your entire face three times: vertically from the top of your forehead, where the hairline begins, to the bottom of your chin, and horizontally from ear to ear. Water must reach through the beard if it is thin; if it is thick, washing its outer surface is sufficient.
Wash each arm from the fingertips up to and including the elbow three times. Start with the right arm. Make sure water covers every part, including between the fingers and the elbows themselves.
With wet hands, wipe from the front of your head to the back, then from the back to the front, once. The wiping covers the entire head. You do not need to wet your hands again for this step.
Using the water remaining on your hands after wiping your head, pass your index fingers inside your ears and your thumbs along the outside, once. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The ears are part of the head” (narrated by Abu Dawud, no. 134, and Ibn Majah, no. 444).
Wash each foot from the tips of the toes up to and including the ankle three times. Start with the right foot. Pass the fingers of your left hand between your toes to make sure water reaches them. The Prophet ﷺ warned: “Woe to the heels from the Fire!” (narrated by Al-Bukhari, no. 165, and Muslim, no. 242), emphasising the importance of washing the heels thoroughly.
The dua after wudu
Once you have completed wudu, it is recommended (Sunnah) to say the following supplication. The Prophet ﷺ said: “None of you performs wudu and completes it well, then says [this supplication], without the eight gates of Paradise being opened for them, and they may enter through whichever they wish” (narrated by Muslim, no. 234).
“I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, without any partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.”
According to another version narrated by At-Tirmidhi (no. 55), you may add:
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ
Allahumma ij’alni mina at-tawwabin wa ij’alni mina al-mutatah-hirin.
“O Allah, make me one of those who repent and one of those who purify themselves.”
What breaks wudu?
Wudu is invalidated by the following, according to scholarly consensus or the majority opinion:
1. Anything that exits from the two private passages — Urine, faeces, wind, pre-seminal fluid (madhi) or semen (mani). This is established by scholarly consensus. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah does not accept the prayer of any of you who has hadath [ritual impurity] until they perform wudu.” A man from Hadramawt asked: “What is hadath?” Abu Hurayrah replied: “Passing wind, silently or audibly” (narrated by Al-Bukhari, no. 6954).
2. Deep sleep — Deep sleep during which a person loses awareness breaks wudu. Light sleep while sitting, without losing awareness, does not break it according to many scholars. This is based on the hadith narrated by Muslim (no. 376), describing the Companions who dozed while waiting for prayer.
3. Loss of consciousness — Whether caused by fainting, anaesthesia or intoxication.
4. Directly touching the private parts without a barrier — The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever touches their private part should perform wudu” (narrated by Abu Dawud, no. 181, and At-Tirmidhi, no. 82; authenticated by Al-Albani). This is the opinion of the majority of scholars: Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali. Hanafi scholars do not consider this act to invalidate wudu.
5. Eating camel meat — The Prophet ﷺ was asked about performing wudu after eating camel meat and replied: “Yes, perform wudu” (narrated by Muslim, no. 360). This is the view of the Hanbali school and has been adopted by many contemporary scholars.
Wiping over socks (Khuff)
It is permissible to wipe over socks or ankle-covering footwear instead of washing the feet, provided they were put on while the feet were in a state of ritual purity, after valid wudu.
The wiping period is one day and one night (24 hours) for a resident, and three days and three nights (72 hours) for a traveller. This is based on the hadith of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Prophet ﷺ prescribed three days and their nights for the traveller, and one day and one night for the resident” (narrated by Muslim, no. 276).
Wipe by passing wet hands over the tops of the socks, from the tips of the toes towards the ankles, once.
Dry ablution (Tayammum)
When water is unavailable or you are unable to use it because of illness, injury or extreme cold, Allah has granted a concession: Tayammum, dry ablution using clean earth.
Allah says in the Quran:
فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُم مِّنْهُ
“If you cannot find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth and wipe your faces and hands with it.”
— Quran, Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:6)
Tayammum is performed by striking clean earth, such as sand, stone or an earthen wall, once with both hands, then wiping the face and then the hands, palms and backs, up to the wrists. This is the most authentic opinion, based on the hadith of Ammar ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated by Al-Bukhari (no. 338) and Muslim (no. 368).
The virtues of wudu
Wudu is more than an act of physical purification: it has a deep spiritual dimension. Here are some of its virtues mentioned in the Sunnah:
“When a Muslim servant, or a believer, performs wudu and washes their face, every sin they committed with their eyes is washed away with the water, or with the last drop of water. When they wash their hands, every sin their hands committed is washed away with the water. When they wash their feet, every sin their feet walked towards is washed away with the water, until they emerge purified of their sins.”
— Narrated by Muslim (no. 244)
The Prophet ﷺ also said: “Shall I tell you what Allah uses to erase sins and raise ranks? Completing wudu despite difficulties, taking many steps towards the mosques, and waiting for one prayer after another. That is ribat [guarding the frontiers for Allah]” (narrated by Muslim, no. 251).
Common mistakes to avoid
Saying the intention aloud — The intention is in the heart. Saying “I am performing wudu for Dhuhr prayer” aloud is an innovation with no basis in the Sunnah.
Wasting water — The Prophet ﷺ performed wudu with one mudd of water, approximately 750 ml. Wasting water is prohibited, even beside a river (narrated by Ibn Majah, no. 425).
Not washing the elbows and ankles — These areas are included in the obligation. The Prophet ﷺ specifically warned against neglecting the heels.
Not passing water between the fingers and toes — The Prophet ﷺ said: “Perform wudu thoroughly and pass water between the fingers” (narrated by Abu Dawud, no. 142).
Wiping the head several times — The head is wiped only once, moving from front to back and back to front. Unlike washing the other body parts, it is not repeated three times.

Frequently asked questions
Does nail polish break wudu?
Nail polish does not invalidate existing wudu, but it prevents water from reaching the nail when performing wudu again. It must therefore be removed before wudu. Contemporary scholars differ regarding so-called “breathable” or “halal” nail polish; removing it is the more cautious approach.
Does bleeding break wudu?
Scholars differ on this question. According to the Hanafi school, heavy bleeding breaks wudu. According to the Maliki, Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools, in the most widespread opinion, bleeding from the nose, a cut or a similar injury does not break wudu, because there is no explicit, authentic evidence from the Prophet ﷺ on this point.
Do I need to repeat wudu after touching a woman?
Scholars differ. The Shafi‘i school considers direct skin-to-skin contact between a man and a non-mahram woman to invalidate wudu, based on a reading of verse 4:43. The Hanafi school and the Hanbali school, according to Ibn Taymiyyah’s opinion, consider touching to invalidate wudu only when accompanied by desire. The more cautious approach is to repeat wudu if in doubt.
Can I perform wudu with seawater?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said about the sea: “Its water is pure and purifying, and its dead animals are lawful” (narrated by Abu Dawud, no. 83; At-Tirmidhi, no. 69; An-Nasa’i, no. 59; and Ibn Majah, no. 386; authenticated by Al-Albani). Seawater is therefore valid for both wudu and ghusl.
How many times should each body part be washed?
The minimum obligation is to wash each body part once, provided water completely covers the required area. Washing three times is the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and the recommended practice. Washing more than three times is discouraged. The Prophet ﷺ performed wudu by washing three times and said: “Whoever adds to this has done wrong, transgressed and acted unjustly” (narrated by Abu Dawud, no. 135, and An-Nasa’i, no. 140).
